Vasilescu

Vasilescu was a boy at Orphanage 42 in Iasi Romania. Like the other 32 children in our section that we worked with, he was autistic in addition to having R.A.D. (Reaction Attachment Disorder). As a result, he rarely looked directly at anyone. Most of the time he would just look at his arm like he is doing in the top picture.

I decided to take a camera and show him it. He became very interested in the camera and I was able to take a picture of him. After this occassion he looked at me directly in the eyes a few more times and one time even smiled. Each time he looked at me I felt priveleged to witness him opening up. It is amazing to work with children and see them progress and improve their lives.
